Micram RF modules

For Fiber-Optical Prototyping and Measurement Applications

Micram RF Modules provide a convenient and effective means of implementing Micram silicon in a test lab environment. Originally developed for internal use, Micram RF Modules eliminate time-consuming configuration work and provides a stable, reliable chip mount with easy access for any kind of test equipment.

For years, the Micram engineering team dealt with the many problems of building custom measurement rigs for its High-Speed Measurement Laboratory. Hours of soldering and fitting cables often resulted in poor performance and inaccurate measurements due to the lack of stable accessory components, such as suitable standardized connectors and provision for cooling, as well as signal reflections and signal losses caused by rig assembly and configuration problems.

Micram High-Speed Measurement Lab

After much experience, thought and discussion, the Micram team created a special mount for Micram chips under test, using brass modules and suitable high-frequency substrates and providing easy signal access through standard K-connectors.

Test and measurement of high-speed fiber-optical systems requires a range of capabilities: multiplexing to generate extremely high bit rates (up to 100 Gbit/s and beyond), de-multiplexing to enable lower-performing oscilloscopes to measure performance, clock and data recovery and clock phase shifting. Micram created RF Modules for each of these functions and now offers them for use in other labs.

The following modules are available (please select from Article Index at the top of this page to see details):

CDR8086

Clock & Data Recovery with 1:2 Demux for 80 or 86 Gb/s (using an external loop filter up to 107 Gb/s)

MX2180 2:1 Mux for up to 80 Gb/s
MX4140 4:1 Mux for up to 45 Gb/s
CK20 Clock Phase Shifter 20Ghz, 2 channels, fully adjustable
MA10 Measurement Amplifier for up to 10 GHz
MA40 Measurement Amplifier for up to 40 GHz

Please note: The silicon used in Micram RF Modules is fabricated using a research SiGe technology (fT=200GHz); therefore Micram cannot guarantee electrical specifications long-term. However, each module comes with an individual measurement protocol and meets our published specifications at time of delivery.

MX2180 2:1 Mux for 80 Gb/s

The MX2180 is a High-Speed 2:1 Multiplexer for data rates above 80 Gb/s. Key features of the MX2180:

  • single-ended and differential IO operation
  • broadband operation
  • 360o at 80 Gb/s clock phase margin at data inputs
  • sampling flip flops for data inputs to ensure optimal timing at mux core
  • adjustable output swing
  • adjustable duty cycle
  • single supply voltage

MX2180 boardAt the data inputs the MX2180 consists of two symmetrical input buffers which allows single-ended as well as differential drive. Furthermore the input buffers provide a high input sensitivity of 50 Vpp. The same holds for the clock input which runs at half of the frequency of the output data rate (half-rate clocking: e.g. 40 GHz clock and 80 Gb/s output data rate).

Main fields of application are:

  • general high-speed pattern generation
  • speed upgrade of measurement equipment (e.g. Agilent ParBert or Anritsu 1758/1763)
  • low jitter test data generation

Packages:
The MX2180 is available as ruggedized K and/or V connector module.

MX4140 4:1 Multiplexer for up to 43 Gb/s

The MX4140 is a 4:1 high-speed Multiplexer for data rates up to 43 Gb/s. Key features are:

  • single-ended and differential I/O operation,
  • broadband operation,
  • adjustable output swing,
  • scaleable architecture (e.g. 16:1 MUX),
  • single supply voltage.

MX 4140 moduleAt the data inputs, the MX4140 consists of four symmetrical buffers which allow for single-ended as well as differential drive. Furthermore the input buffers provide a high input sensitivity of 50 mVpp (single-ended).
The same holds for the clock input, which runs at half of the frequency of the output data rate (so called half-rate clocking: e.g. 20 GHz clock for 40 Gb/s output data rate). This allows to use reasonably priced RF-synthesizers in the 26.5 GHz band for pattern generation in the 40 Gb/s range.
